FG Launches Digital Postcode System, Asks Nigerians to Locate and Use Their Codes

The Federal Government has unveiled a National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, and the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, is asking citizens to locate their codes and start using them.

Tijani made the announcement in a post on X on Thursday, framing the initiative as a move to make locations nationwide simpler to identify and to link individuals and businesses with services and opportunities.

Under the arrangement, which is run by the Nigerian Postal Service, every addressable building in the country receives its own 11-character digital postcode.

The code is intended to serve as an exact, GIS-enabled reference for pinpointing locations.

According to Tijani, the system can assist businesses in reaching customers outside their immediate areas, allow families to give precise locations during emergencies, and help government agencies deliver essential services to communities.

“Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers. And every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity,” he said.

He added that reliable postcodes would be one of the building blocks required to back President Bola Tinubu’s goal of a $1tn economy.

“As we work towards (President Bola Tinubu’s) ambition for a $1 trillion economy, we must build the foundations that allow more Nigerians to participate, trade and prosper. This is one of those foundations,” Tijani said.

The minister urged Nigerians to look up their postcodes on the official Digital Postcode website, postcode.gov.ng, and to pass them on to relatives, friends and businesses.

The system identifies locations at five levels — state, local government area, district, area and building — with a unique code assigned to each addressable building.

NIPOST had previously stated that the digital postcode would back services such as deliveries, emergency response, public service delivery and e-commerce by offering a common reference for locations.
