NUC Approves 30 New Programmes for Federal University Dutse, Including AI and Law
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 30 new academic programmes for the Federal University Dutse (FUD) in Jigawa State. The approval, which includes Artificial Intelligence, Law, Data Science, Medical Laboratory Science, and Community Health, was communicated in a letter dated September 11, 2026, with reference number NUC/AP/F33/VOL.II/15, signed by the Director of Academic Planning at the NUC, Abubakar M. Girei.
The letter was addressed to the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ahmad Gumel. According to a statement issued on Tuesday in Dutse by the Acting Director of Public Affairs, Abdullahi Yahaya, the commission also approved the establishment of the Faculty of Law to begin academic activities and granted full-time mode for all 30 programmes starting from the 2026/2027 academic session.
Among the approved undergraduate programmes are B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence, B.Sc. Data Science, B.Sc. Information Systems, and L.L.B. Common and Islamic Law. Other programmes include B.Sc. Ed. Physics, Biology, and Mathematics, as well as B.Ed. Educational Management, Early Childhood Education, and Adult Education.
In the health sciences, the NUC approved B.Sc. Community Health, Medical Laboratory Science, Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Radiography, and Optometry. Additional programmes listed are B.Sc. Parasitology and Entomology, Environmental Standards, Water Sanitation and Hygiene, Applied Geology, and Remote Sensing, along with B.A. Ed. Arabic and English. The university also received approval for Science Laboratory Technology with options in Biology and Biochemistry Technology.
At the postgraduate level, the approved programmes include PGD, M.Sc., and PhD in Forestry and Wildlife, Accounting, Treasury and Finance, Banking and Finance, and Information Technology. Masters in Banking and Finance and Masters in Accounting and Finance were also approved.
In his reaction, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ahmad Gumel described the development as a significant step in his initiative to introduce new academic programmes. He stated, “The new programmes are specifically designed to address the evolving educational needs of society as the courses focus on critical areas such as technology, science education and health-related disciplines.”
He further noted, “This strategic academic growth aims to equip students with relevant skills and knowledge that align with current industry demands and societal challenges, ensuring that FUD graduates are well-prepared for the workforce.”
