Rights Group Asks Enugu to Explain Suspension of Nsukka Monarch

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has urged the Enugu State Government to shed light on the suspension of Igwe Williams Ezugwu, the traditional ruler of Ibagwa Opi Ogbozalla Autonomous Community in Nsukka Local Government Area.

In a statement issued on October 1 and signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, HURIWA said the clarification became necessary after reports emerged that the monarch had hosted former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate Peter Obi at his palace.

The group wants the state government to confirm whether the monarch's meeting with Obi is linked to the suspension.

HURIWA also demanded that the government disclose the specific allegations levelled against the traditional ruler and identify the relevant sections of the Traditional Rulers Law that were applied in taking the action.

The organisation further sought to know whether the monarch was afforded an opportunity to respond to the allegations before the suspension was imposed.

Expressing concern about the potential impact of political activities on traditional institutions, HURIWA called on the state government to ensure that traditional rulers are treated in line with applicable laws and due process.

The group also urged that the suspension be reviewed if it is established that due process was not followed.

According to HURIWA, traditional institutions play vital roles in their communities and should be permitted to carry out their cultural and community functions without unnecessary political interference.

The association appealed to the Enugu State Government to provide Nigerians with more information about the circumstances surrounding the monarch's suspension.
