Jonathan: 2027 Polls Will Gauge Nigeria's Democratic Maturity

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has described the 2027 general election as a litmus test for how far Nigeria's democracy has matured, calling on citizens to place peace, unity and justice above all else.

Jonathan made the remarks on Thursday in a message marking Nigeria's 66th independence anniversary, as the country prepares for another round of elections.

He appealed to Nigerians to stay patriotic and to protect the country's unity as the political season draws nearer.

"In a few months, we will enter another electoral season, a period that will test our democratic maturity. I urge all Nigerians to remain patriotic and prioritise actions that safeguard peace, unity, and justice," he said.

Reflecting on the journey since independence, Jonathan noted that Nigeria has encountered many difficulties over the decades but has repeatedly pulled through because of the determination of its people.

He encouraged Nigerians not to lose hope and to remain united in the pursuit of a brighter future.

"Today, our nation marks another significant milestone in its journey of nationhood. Sixty-six years ago, we secured our independence and took our destiny into our own hands," he said.

"Through the years, Nigeria has faced numerous challenges, but through our collective resilience, we have always emerged triumphant.

"As we reflect on this journey, let us remain steadfast in faith and hope, and continue to work in unity."

The former president said Nigeria stands to gain enormously if it properly channels its diversity and its rich natural and human resources towards sustainable development.

He singled out young Nigerians, urging them to keep hope alive and to work with courage for a country that can guarantee a better life for future generations.

"The years ahead hold immense possibilities, provided we harness our diversity and our abundant natural and human resources to drive sustainable development," he said.

"To our youth and fellow citizens, let us maintain hope, show courage, and work with faith toward a better country that guarantees a prosperous future for generations to come."

Jonathan, however, cautioned that realising that vision would demand more from those in positions of authority.

He urged leaders across all levels to show greater patriotism and to tackle the country's social and economic problems through personal sacrifice, good governance and accountability.

"Yet, for this future to be realised, leadership must rise to the occasion. To leaders at all levels, this moment demands absolute responsibility and deeper patriotism," he said.

"We must confront our pressing social and economic challenges by prioritising personal sacrifice, good governance, accountability, and strict adherence to the rule of law."

He also called on Nigerians to stay devoted to national service and to join hands in building a country that is peaceful, secure and fair to all.

"Let us remain dedicated, showing greater commitment and sacrifice in national service to build a truly peaceful, secure, and equitable nation for ourselves and the generations ahead," he added.
