Nine Killed in Ijebu-Ode/Ore Expressway Crash

At least nine persons reportedly killed in a road crash along the Ijebu-Ode/Ore Expressway on Monday.

It was gathered that the crash occurred around 4:55 p.m., involving a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus marked 14B-299DT, belonging to Delta Line, and a white Sino Truck commercial vehicle, with registration number AAB162XD.

The spokesperson of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun Command, Afolabi Odunsi, confirmed the incident in a statement made available to newsmen on Monday night.

He said a total of nine persons, comprising three males and six females, were involved in the crash.

“Sadly, all nine persons were killed in the incident,” Odunsi said.

He explained that “The crash occurred while it was raining, with the road pavement wet.

“The road itself was paved. Preliminary investigation identified speed violation (SPV) as the probable cause of the crash.”

According to him, the deceased victims were evacuated and deposited at the General Hospital Morgue, Ijebu-Ode, while the vehicles involved were towed to the Ilese Police Station by the Ilese Police MTD.

He quoted the Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, as urging motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, to exercise maximum caution during rainfall, obey speed limits, maintain safe following distances and avoid any driving behaviour that could endanger lives.

“He also reminded motorists that speeding becomes even more dangerous on wet roads, as reduced tyre grip and visibility can make it difficult to control a vehicle or stop safely.

“The Federal Road Safety Corps extends its condolences to the families of the victims and calls on all road users to make safety their priority at all times,” he said.
