Sokoto Governor Aliyu Urges Federal-State Alliance to End Banditry

Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu has urged stronger partnership between the Federal Government and state authorities to confront banditry and other criminal activities plaguing parts of Nigeria.

In a message to mark Nigeria's 66th Independence Day on Thursday, Aliyu praised the Federal Government for its assistance in Sokoto's battle against banditry, stressing that lasting peace depends on continued joint efforts between the two tiers of government.

"There is a strong synergy between the Sokoto State Government and the Federal Government in our collective commitment towards protecting the lives and property of our people," the governor said.

He voiced confidence that sustained collaboration would bring an end to insecurity in the state.

Aliyu outlined steps his administration has taken to back conventional security agencies, including the provision of logistics and equipment.

Since taking office, he said, the state government has acquired over 200 patrol vehicles, two emirate bulletproof vehicles, 100 Buffalo armoured personnel carriers, 200 motorcycles, 3,200 security hardware items, 2,000 bulletproof vests and 200 night-vision goggles.

He added that 100 thermal-vision scopes and other security gadgets were also supplied. The government, he said, helped ensure the full operation of the Nigerian Air Force Base in Sokoto and upgraded the Department of State Services tracker from 4G to 5G technology.

Aliyu also pointed to the creation of the Sokoto State Community Guard Corps, for which 40 Hilux vans and 700 motorcycles were purchased.

Other initiatives he listed included facilitating the setting up of a military barracks in Illela and a Police Mobile Barracks at Tara Village in Sabon Birni Local Government Area.

The governor restated his administration's resolve to stamp out banditry and called on residents to back government efforts to restore peace throughout the state.

He also honoured Nigeria's founding fathers, asking citizens to emulate their patriotism and sacrifices in nation-building.

Aliyu noted that since independence, Nigeria has gone through "many ups and downs" but has also achieved notable progress over the years.

He expressed hope that the country would keep advancing through renewed dedication and collective action.

He appealed to Nigerians to continue supporting, cooperating with and praying for the nation's leaders so they can carry out their duties effectively.

The governor wished Nigerians a happy 66th Independence Anniversary.
