UNIBEN Among Five Federal Universities Cited for Ranking Gains

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) in Edo State has been named among five federal universities that showed notable improvement in the latest ranking of Nigerian universities conducted by the Federal Ministry of Education.
The other four institutions are Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka; and the University of Ilorin.
In a statement, the ministry said the progress came after reforms introduced by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa. He had instructed the Tertiary Education Ranking Advisory Committee, headed by Professor Peter Okebukola, to begin the 2026 ranking of higher institutions in preparation for the 2027 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.
The ministry reported that 29 Nigerian universities, UNIBEN included, earned places in the THE World University Rankings, up from 24 in the 2026 ranking.
It added that the assessment framework developed by the committee is intended to boost institutional visibility, encourage healthy competition among Nigerian universities and strengthen their global competitiveness.
Research quality output was described by the ministry as the strongest pillar among the ranking indicators.
In a bid to raise its research visibility, UNIBEN's management recently instructed academic staff to update their Google Scholar profiles. The exercise is being coordinated by the university's Directorate of Academic Planning.
So far, more than 1,200 academics have been captured, putting UNIBEN at the top among Nigerian universities taking part in the exercise.
The university said the exercise will run until Monday, October 5.
The statement was released by the university's Public Relations Officer, Benedicta Ehanire.
