GOP Rep. Moore Claims Nixon Was 'Couped' and 'Framed' in Watergate

Rep. Riley Moore (R-W.Va.) asserted on Thursday that Richard Nixon was "absolutely couped out of office" and "framed" in the Watergate affair.

Speaking at the Nixon Foundation's annual Grand Strategy Summit in Washington, Moore said, "We now know more about the deep state and its power and ability to literally change things at the top."

He went on to say that Nixon was aware of such forces, stating, "An interesting aspect of this as it relates to Richard Nixon — he knew all of this. He knew it and he stayed quiet about it. Because he didn't want to erode the confidence of the American people in our system of governance and our institutions."

Moore concluded, "The truth is now out there, so I think people feel a bit more liberated to talk about Richard Nixon and what an amazing president he was in this country."

The lawmaker's comments follow a Wall Street Journal report that the Justice Department has opened a review into whether the special prosecutor's office engaged in misconduct during its investigation of the Watergate Hotel break-in, according to people familiar with the matter.

According to the Journal, former Nixon aide Geoff Shepard was invited by a senior DOJ official to make a presentation at the department's headquarters. Shepard has long argued since 1972 that Watergate was a scheme to conceal the identities of Nixon's Democratic donors in his reelection campaign.

Moore drew a comparison between Trump and Nixon, saying the former president "faced this in his first term with the fake Russia collusion hoax and all that."

In 2020, the Senate Intelligence Committee released a report that identified significant contacts between the Trump campaign and Moscow during the 2016 election.

The report stated, "Russia and other countries took advantage of the Transition Team's inexperience, transparent opposition to Obama Administration policies, and Trump's desire to deepen ties with Russia, to pursue unofficial channels through which Russia could conduct diplomacy," adding that this left the "transition open to influence and manipulation."

That report came after a 22-month investigation by former special counsel Robert Mueller into possible collusion.

In 2019, Trump criticized "Radical Left Wing Media" on the platform X, then known as Twitter, for "knowingly getting the Russia Collusion Delusion story so wrong" while Mueller was conducting his probe.
