State Police Bill and 2027 Budget Await Lawmakers as National Assembly Reconvenes
Nigeria's National Assembly has reconvened from its yearly break, with the completion of the State Police Bill and deliberations on the 2027 Appropriation Bill taking centre stage.
The legislature had commenced its 2026 recess on Thursday, July 23, 2026, after wrapping up plenary activities. The Senate had initially planned to resume on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, but pushed the date back to September 29 because repair work on the sound systems in both chambers was still ongoing.
Senator Yomi Adaramodu, the Senate Spokesman, said in an interview that once sitting resumes, priority will be given to giving the State Police Bill final approval. The proposed law has already been forwarded to the state Houses of Assembly.
According to him, a number of states have already given the bill their nod, and it needs the backing of no fewer than 24 of the 36 state legislatures to scale through. He explained that after the required number of state assemblies endorse and send the bill back, federal lawmakers will reconcile all views before granting it final passage.
Adaramodu expressed optimism that the 10th Assembly would pass the State Police Bill before its term wraps up in June next year.
The Senate spokesman also said that with plenary back in session, legislators are waiting for the President to present the 2027 Appropriation Bill. He stated that legislative work on the budget will begin as soon as it is received, and gave assurances that the budget will be given thorough consideration and approved despite the approaching political season.
A National Assembly insider also told our correspondent that discussions on whether to scrap State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) or move the conduct of local government polls to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will be given urgent attention.
The source said the legislature will also concentrate on oversight duties and monitor the implementation of recent court decisions on financial autonomy for local government areas.
According to the source, the Senate will screen executive measures designed to stabilise food security, tackle foreign exchange volatility, and manage fuel supply nationwide. Lawmakers will also meet again with security chiefs over ongoing intelligence operations, counter-insurgency efforts in the North, and the persistent threat of kidnapping along transport routes, the source added.
The source further indicated that assessing how legislative interventions have been implemented—such as the Police Trust Fund (Repeal and Re-enactment) framework intended to boost funding for law enforcement agencies—remains a key priority for the Senate.
In addition, the screening and confirmation of presidential appointments for judicial posts, board openings, ambassadorial postings, and key federal agencies that piled up during the recess will be fast-tracked.
