Gombe Marks 30 Years as Governor Yahaya Vows Faster Development

Gombe State has reached its 30th year of existence, and Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has used the occasion to restate his administration's resolve to speed up development, widen economic openings and deepen investment in key sectors. The milestone coincides with Nigeria's 66th Independence Anniversary.

The governor's message was contained in a special anniversary statement released on Thursday by Ismaila Uba Misilli, his Director General, Press Affairs. According to Yahaya, the two celebrations provide a chance to look back at how Gombe has changed since it was created on October 1, 1996, and to set a fresh direction for growth that can be sustained.

He credited the state's progress to deliberate planning and the rollout of the Gombe State 10-Year Development Plan, known as DEVAGOM. That blueprint, he said, gives priority to human capital, infrastructure, economic expansion, environmental sustainability and a better quality of life.

Yahaya listed a range of interventions his government has carried out in education, healthcare, roads, agriculture, industrialisation, environmental restoration, public-sector reforms, and youth and women empowerment.

Among the major steps he highlighted were the revival of 228 Primary Healthcare Centres, the hiring of teachers and health workers, the construction and repair of over 1,000 kilometres of roads, and the creation of the 1,000-hectare Muhammadu Buhari Industrial Park.

The governor also pointed to agricultural investments through the Agro-Livestock Development Zone, as well as erosion-control projects and the Gombe Goes Green initiative, saying these were designed to boost food security, environmental sustainability and economic diversification.

Yahaya added that his administration had kept up the prompt payment of workers' salaries while also settling debts it inherited, including unpaid gratuities owed to retired civil servants.

"As we celebrate these milestones, we remain conscious that the journey ahead demands even greater commitment," he said, promising to reinforce peace and unity, drive inclusive growth and create more opportunities for residents.

As Chairman of the Northern Nigeria Governors' Forum, Yahaya also congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigerians on the Independence Anniversary. He called on citizens to renew their dedication to unity, peace, justice and democratic development.

"Despite the challenges along our journey, our faith in Nigeria remains strong. We must continue to strengthen our unity, deepen our democracy, promote peace and justice, and work together to build a nation worthy of the sacrifices and aspirations of those who came before us," he added.
