Democrats Hold 12-Point Edge Over Republicans in House Race: Quinnipiac Poll
A fresh Quinnipiac University survey has put Democrats 12 percentage points ahead of Republicans in the contest for control of the House of Representatives.
When asked how they would vote if the election were held at that moment, 51 percent of registered voters polled said they would back Democrats to keep their majority in the House, while 39 percent said they would prefer Republicans to take over the chamber. The remaining 9 percent either did not answer or said they were undecided about which party should lead the lower chamber.
The poll was released as Republicans contend with a series of challenges ahead of the November midterms. President Trump's approval rating has been declining, an unpopular war in Iran entered its seventh month on Monday, and economic issues have moved to the center of American political discussion.
A polling average compiled by Decision Desk HQ placed Trump's approval rating at 37.7 percent on Tuesday afternoon, with 60.2 percent of respondents disapproving of his job performance.
Democrats have also been ahead in recent surveys conducted in states that traditionally lean Republican, including Iowa and Texas — a development that could signal trouble for the GOP as Election Day draws nearer. Republicans currently hold a slim advantage in the House, with 218 GOP members compared to 214 Democrats and one independent.
The Quinnipiac University poll further showed that 62 percent of respondents disapprove of Trump's handling of the economy, while 31 percent approve of his economic performance and 4 percent are either unsure or did not respond.
On foreign policy, 62 percent of those polled said they disapprove of Trump's performance, while 32 percent said they approve and 4 percent were unsure or did not answer.
The Quinnipiac poll was conducted from September 24 to 26 and surveyed 1,032 self-identified registered voters. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.
