9 Passengers Die On Benin – Ore – Ijebu-Ode Expressway
No fewer than 9 passengers were on Monday afternoon confirmed dead in a fatal accident that occurred along the ever-busy Ijebu Ode-Ore Expressway.
The accident, which happene around few minutes to 5.p.m. at the Bethel Area, in the Ijebu-Ode corridor of the expressway, involved a white Toyota Hiace commercial buswith registration plate number: 14B-299DT suspected to belong to the fleet of the Delta State Transport Line and a white Sino Truck marked: AAB 162 XD, also suspected to belong to a company dealing with industrial gas in Ogun State.
Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ogun Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Afolabi Odunsi who confirmed the tragic incident to newsmen Monday evening in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital said a total of 9 persons, comprising three (3) male and six (6) female passengers were involved in the crash.
Odunsi, who disclosed that the entire 9 passengers died on the spot, also explained that “the crash occurred while the weather was raining, with the road pavement wet.
“Preliminary investigation identified speed violation (SPV) as the probable cause of the crash. The FRSC rescue team arrived at the scene within two minutes of receiving the report, arriving at 16: 58hrs.”
He further disclosed that corpses of the victims were evacuated and deposited at the State Hospital Morgue in Ijebu-Ode, while the two accidented vehicles involved were towed to the Ilese Police Divisional headquarters by the Ilese police operatives from the division’s Motor Traffic Division (MTD).
“The Sector Command Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi urges motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, to exercise maximum caution during rainfall, obey speed limits, maintain safe following distances and avoid any driving behaviour that could endanger lives,” he said.
He also reminded motorist that speeding becomes even more dangerous on wet roads, as reduced tyre grip and visibility can make it difficult to control a vehicle or stop safely.
