House Democrat: ‘We’re going to have one hell of a donnybrook over ending these tariffs’

Rep. Greg Stanton (D-Ariz.) said Wednesday that there is going to be a tough battle to end President Trump’s tariffs when Democrats take over Congress.

“The president’s policies, without any resistance from the Republicans, have directly led to increasing prices. Life is much less affordable under this president, starting with these tariffs,” Stanton told NewsNation’s Blake Burman on “The Hill.”

“These tariffs are illegal. They’re increasing prices on working-class families across the United States of America. And they’re increasing prices on our allies, hurting their economies as well. These tariffs have got to go. We’re going to have one hell of a donnybrook over ending these tariffs, which is making life so much more expensive,” the Arizona Democrat added.

Stanton’s comments follow a notable victory for Democrats in this year’s midterms. The party won both the House and Senate and are projected to increase their caucus sizes in both houses from 214 to 262 and 47 to 55, respectively, according to Decision Desk HQ.

The Democrats’ victory came amid a challenging political environment for Republicans, with the GOP weighed down by issues like the unpopular war in Iran, President Trump’s slumping approval rating and concerns about the cost of living.

With their majorities in both the House and Senate, Democrats will most likely stymie Trump’s policy agenda, including his tariffs. The president’s tariff agenda during his second term has rattled global markets, strained relationships with allies and increased economic uncertainty.

Earlier this week, Democratic National Committee Chair said Democrats should take action to end Trump’s tariffs and the Iran war in the case that they regained power following the midterm elections.

“I think the first thing they should do is repeal the tariffs that Donald Trump put in place,” Martin said.

The Hill has reached out to the White House for comment.
