Trump Labels Canada 'One of the Worst Countries' as Trade Rift Deepens
United States President Donald Trump has described Canada as "one of the worst countries in the entire world," as trade tensions between the two longstanding allies continue to escalate.
Speaking at the White House on Monday, Trump accused Canada of unfair treatment of the United States and of slapping tariffs of as much as 400 percent on certain American agricultural goods.
"They want to have a deal with us. They call us all the time," Trump said, according to Mediaite. "The problem is, they have treated the United States very unfairly. They have been one of the worst countries in the entire world."
The US president further claimed that Canada takes advantage of the United States, saying Ottawa depends heavily on Washington for both trade and defence.
His remarks come as Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney works to deepen Canada's economic and strategic partnerships with Europe, against the backdrop of deteriorating relations with Washington.
Canada and the European Union are in talks on closer cooperation in sectors including trade, defence, energy, artificial intelligence and critical minerals.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has also floated the idea of making Canada the bloc's first "associate member."
Canada is not pursuing full EU membership, but is seeking to diversify its economic and security relationships as friction with the United States continues.
The two North American neighbours remain embroiled in a major trade dispute involving tariffs on goods worth billions of dollars.
Trump said he expects Canada to eventually come to the table for an agreement with Washington.
"I think what's going to happen is, over the next three or four weeks, they're going to come to us and they're going to say, 'We need to get rid of all the tariffs,'" he said.
"We're going to win everything," Trump added, stressing that any final deal must be "a fair deal."
