Nigeria Records 835,000 Monthly Facebook Marketplace Listings

Facebook Marketplace, Meta’s online buying and selling platform, records more than 835,000 listings monthly in Nigeria, with electronics, home items and fashion accounting for a significant share of the activity.
The platform disclosed this as it marked its 10th anniversary, highlighting Nigerians’ growing use of digital platforms to discover products, reach potential customers and trade within their communities.
According to the figures released by Meta, electronics account for more than 180,000 listings monthly, while home items and fashion each record over 110,000 listings. Home improvement products contribute more than 40,000 listings every month.
The figures provide an insight into the range of products offered through the platform, which allows individuals and businesses to advertise items for sale and connect directly with prospective buyers.
The development also underscores the role of social media platforms in facilitating online commerce, particularly for sellers seeking to reach customers without relying exclusively on physical shops.
Facebook Marketplace was introduced in 2016 after Meta observed that users were already buying and selling products through Facebook Groups. The dedicated platform was designed to make it easier for users to discover available items and communicate with prospective buyers and sellers.
Speaking on the anniversary, the Head of Communications, Sub-Saharan Africa at Meta, Oluwasola Obagbemi, said the platform was developed to simplify trading activities that were already taking place within Facebook communities.
“People come to Facebook to connect over the things that matter to them, and buying and selling is part of that everyday activity,” Obagbemi said.
He added that the company was recognising the individuals and communities that had sustained the platform over the past decade, while emphasising the need to make online transactions safer.
As digital marketplaces continue to provide alternative channels for buying and selling, however, the possibility of fraudulent listings and deceptive transactions remains a concern for users.
Meta advised buyers to review sellers’ profiles, examine their other listings and check available ratings before committing to a purchase.
It also urged users arranging physical exchanges to meet in public, well-lit locations during daylight hours and inform trusted persons about their plans.
The company further advised buyers to inspect items before making payments where possible, avoid payment links shared through chats and access payment services through official websites or applications.
Users were also encouraged to discontinue transactions that appeared suspicious and report questionable listings or accounts through Facebook’s reporting tools.
While the platform’s anniversary highlights the scale of online trading activity in Nigeria, the figures released by Meta represent listings rather than confirmed sales or completed transactions.
