WAANSA Official Raises Alarm Over Ukrainian Troops in Libya

A senior official of the West African Action Network on Small Arms (WAANSA) has voiced alarm over reports that Ukrainian military personnel are active in Libya, cautioning that their presence could undermine stability in the region and endanger maritime traffic in the Mediterranean.

Martin Igwe, who serves as WAANSA's first regional vice president, said the reported operations carry implications for international shipping and the security of key sea lanes.

His statement came after an investigation by the French broadcaster Radio France Internationale (RFI), which was said to have verified the deployment of roughly 200 Ukrainian military personnel in Libya.

The report alleged that these personnel took part in an attack on a Russian gas carrier, the Arctic Metagaz, and are providing instruction to Libyan forces in the operation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and uncrewed surface vessels.

These developments have prompted questions about whether the conflict could spread beyond its current areas of operation and what that might mean for the safety of vital global maritime corridors.

The Mediterranean functions as a crucial route for international trade, energy shipments and the transport of essential goods linking Europe, North Africa and broader world markets.

Should military action be directed at commercial or energy vessels, the risks to security would grow, shipping timetables could be thrown into disarray, and the costs of transport and insurance would likely rise.

Energy security in the region is also a worry. According to the account, the reported activities could place supply routes that serve Middle Eastern and North African nations, as well as parts of Southern and Southeastern Europe, under greater threat.

Another point of anxiety is the reported collaboration between Ukrainian intelligence services and authorities in western Libya. Such ties could exacerbate existing rifts in the country, especially if competing political and military groups view the reported actions as a danger to their own interests.

Libya has stayed divided along political and military lines despite numerous attempts to bring about durable peace. A fresh confrontation drawing in outside forces could set back reconciliation, sharpen internal power struggles and open the door to more foreign involvement.

The prospect of a broader conflict has also sparked fears about interruptions to logistics networks in the Mediterranean, with possible knock-on effects for global trade and economic stability in the region.
