Zverev Set To Finish 2026 As World No. 1 After Alcaraz’s Shanghai Shock

Alexander Zverev is guaranteed to finish the 2026 season as the ATP’s world number one after Carlos Alcaraz suffered a shock third-round defeat at the Shanghai Masters on Monday.

The German had been closing in on the top spot following the withdrawal of reigning number one Jannik Sinner, who is expected to miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury.

However, Alcaraz retained a slim mathematical chance of denying Zverev the year-end ranking until his unexpected 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) defeat by Belgium’s Zizou Bergs in Shanghai.

Reacting to the development, Zverev described the achievement as a dream come true after a season in which he has established himself as one of the leading players on the ATP Tour.

“It’s been a fantastic season for me. Knowing that I will finish the year on top of the rankings is just a dream come true,” he said.

The 29-year-old’s rise to the summit marks a significant milestone in a career that has featured major successes, painful setbacks and a lengthy battle to recover from a serious ankle injury.

Zverev’s progress this season has been aided by the absence of Sinner and Alcaraz, who dominated men’s tennis over the previous two seasons.

After finishing runner-up in three Grand Slam finals, the German finally claimed his maiden major title at the French Open in June before adding the US Open crown last month.

Those triumphs have strengthened his position among the sport’s elite and put him on course to achieve the distinction of finishing a season as the world’s highest-ranked player.

Although Zverev cannot officially move above Sinner in the rankings until 2 November at the earliest, Alcaraz’s elimination means the Spaniard can no longer overtake him in the race for the year-end honour.

Zverev is set to become the first German man to finish a season as world number one. He would also be the oldest player to achieve the distinction for the first time.

His impending achievement is particularly significant given the injury problems that threatened to derail his career.

The German suffered a severe ankle injury during his French Open semi-final against Rafael Nadal in 2022, forcing him out of action for seven months.

He subsequently embarked on a lengthy recovery before rebuilding his form and re-establishing himself among the leading players in men’s tennis.

Since March 2024, Zverev has remained inside the ATP’s top four, underlining his consistency despite the physical and competitive challenges he has faced.

Reflecting on his journey, the German acknowledged the work required to return to the highest level after his injury setback.

“So much work and effort have been put into achieving this goal, especially after coming back from the ankle injury. I look forward to finishing the season in style,” he said.

With the year-end ranking now within reach, Zverev will aim to maintain his momentum in the remaining tournaments and consolidate a season that has brought him Grand Slam success and the prospect of a historic place at the top of men’s tennis.
