FIBA recognises Mustapha Abdullahi as NBBF president

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has congratulated Dr Mustapha Abdullahi on his election as President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), acknowledging the outcome of the federation’s October 15, 2026 elective congress.
In a letter signed by FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis, the world basketball governing body also congratulated members of the newly elected board, who will serve for the 2026–2030 term.
FIBA acknowledged receipt of the NBBF’s official communication on the election and commended the federation’s stated commitment to good governance, constitutional compliance and adherence to applicable FIBA regulations.
Abdullahi, Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, emerged president at the elective congress held in Abuja, polling 40 votes to defeat former D’Tigers captain Olumide Oyedeji, who received eight votes. Another former international, Ejike Ugboaja, did not secure any votes.
Following his emergence, Abdullahi pledged to expand opportunities for young players and strengthen basketball development in Nigeria. He also recalled how his passion for the game once led him to borrow money to buy a pair of basketball shoes.
FIBA also acknowledged the support of Nigerian authorities and other stakeholders involved in the electoral process, highlighting the importance of cooperation in basketball administration.
The international body expressed appreciation to the outgoing NBBF board, led by Engr Ahmadu Musa Kida, for its contributions to the development of basketball in Nigeria.
Zagklis, who recalled his recent meeting with Abdullahi in Berlin, expressed his expectation of meeting the new president again in person and wished him and the board success throughout their tenure.
Abdullahi and his board are expected to lead Nigerian basketball through 2030.
FIBA’s endorsement of Abdullahi is coming after former captain of the D’Tigers and one of the contestants, Olumide Oyedeji, petitioned the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) Electoral Appeals Committee to nullify the federation’s elections and order a fresh poll over alleged constitutional breaches and electoral irregularities.
In an appeal addressed to the committee chaired by lawyer Emmanuel Okibe, Oyedeji challenged his initial exclusion from the list of candidates, the expulsion of eight board members, delegate accreditation and the emergence of Mustapha Abdullahi as NBBF president.
