Kuje Court Adjourns Teacher’s Bail Application In Child Sexual Abuse Case

The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, sitting in Kuje, Abuja, has adjourned the hearing of a motion on notice seeking bail for Ofem Omini, a teacher accused in a sexual abuse case involving a five-year-old girl, to November 10, 2026.

Justice Chinyere Elewa Nwecheonwu fixed the date during proceedings on Wednesday.

The case involves allegations relating to a five-year-old girl at Cherry Field Nursery and Primary School, Gwarimpa, Abuja.

During the proceedings, the court was informed that the first defendant had previously applied for bail before the court handling the case in Asokoro, but the application was refused.

The court also heard that the first defendant had filed a fresh bail application before the Kuje High Court.

Regarding the second defendant, the court was informed that the previous court had granted bail and that the defence was seeking to retain the bail on the same terms.

The defence also requested that the surety who had earlier stood for the second defendant return to reaffirm the commitment by signing the necessary bond.

The case, which reportedly began in 2024, was previously before Court 65 in Asokoro before being transferred to the Kuje High Court because it is designated to handle cases involving gender-based violence.

In an interview, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Elmeela Heritage Support Foundation, Jamila Isah Eneika, disclosed that the case had already progressed to the stage where the victim and other witnesses had testified before it was transferred to Kuje.

According to the information provided, two witnesses from the school, identified as the school nurse and the victim’s second-grade teacher, had testified that they saw blood in the child’s vagina.

However, it remains unclear why the proceedings are starting afresh following the transfer to Kuje and what will happen to the testimonies already given before the former court.

Both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges read to them, according to information from the proceedings.
