INEC flags fake governorship notice targeting six states, warns Nigerians

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned Nigerians against a fraudulent publication circulating online that falsely claims to be a special announcement by the Commission regarding governorship candidates in six states.

INEC issued the disclaimer in a statement posted on its official X handle on Monday, describing the publication as fake and stating that it did not originate from the Commission.

The fraudulent notice purportedly addresses issues affecting the lists of governorship candidates in Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe, and Kano states.

Publication is fake

According to INEC, the publication is not authentic and should be disregarded by members of the public.

“The attention of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been drawn to a fraudulent publication circulating online and purporting to be a special announcement by the Commission regarding issues affecting the list of governorship candidates in six states: Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe, and Kano.

“The Commission wishes to categorically inform the general public that the publication is FAKE and did not originate from INEC.”

The Commission urged Nigerians not to share the fraudulent notice, advising them to rely only on official notices, press releases, and other information published through its verified communication channels.

INEC further clarified that any claim suggesting it had issued a special announcement concerning governorship candidates in the six states was false.

It also urged the public to remain vigilant and verify electoral information through its official channels to avoid being misled by fraudulent publications.

The Commission reiterated its commitment to providing accurate information and advised Nigerians to obtain electoral updates exclusively from its verified platforms.

NRS also warns against fake recruitment notice

INEC’s warning comes about a week after the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) cautioned the public against a fraudulent recruitment notice circulating on social media and other online platforms.

The notice allegedly offered employment opportunities within the agency and directed applicants to submit their information through an email address not associated with the NRS.

The agency clarified that it had neither commenced nor authorised any recruitment exercise. It also stated that it had not appointed any individual, consultant, agent, or third party to conduct recruitment on its behalf.

The Service also reminded the public that the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has been succeeded by the Nigeria Revenue Service and advised Nigerians to be cautious of any recruitment announcements issued in the name of FIRS.
