Chuck Todd Criticizes Sen. Schmitt Over Basketball Team Mix-Up at Hearing
Chuck Todd, a former moderator of "Meet the Press" and political analyst, criticized Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Missouri) on Tuesday following a Senate hearing, describing the senator's line of questioning as "just an embarrassing moment" and "a disaster." Todd made the remarks in a social media post after the hearing, adding that "confirmation bias virus runs deep with Schmitt."
During the hearing, Schmitt questioned former special counsel Jack Smith, attempting to link him to Fani Willis, a top prosecutor in Atlanta, and others who filed charges against former President Donald Trump after he left office. Republicans on the panel repeatedly argued that Smith's investigation was politically biased against Trump and that he should be discredited.
Schmitt asked Smith whether he remembered attending a 2024 Atlanta Hawks basketball game. Smith responded, "I really don't think so. It's possible I flew through the Atlanta airport on the way to Florida, but I do not have a recollection of going to Atlanta. I definitely did not go to a Hawks game."
Later in the hearing, when Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) had her turn to question Smith, she pointed out that Schmitt might have confused the Atlanta Hawks with the Iowa Hawkeyes, who played at the University of Maryland on the same day as the Hawks game Schmitt referenced. "That might be the confusion over the names of the team. But perhaps you should have looked at it more carefully," Klobuchar said. Schmitt fired back, accusing Klobuchar of trying to "rehabilitate the witness."
Todd's criticism focused on the mix-up and what he described as Schmitt's biased approach. The exchange highlighted the partisan tensions during the hearing, which centered on Smith's investigation into Trump.
