Nigeria Rolls Out Digital Home Address System With Unique 11-Character Postcodes

The federal government has started the nationwide rollout of a digital home address system, effective from October 1. The initiative is designed to give buildings across the country a precise, verifiable location identifier.
Below are five key facts about the new system and what it means for users.
Every building in Nigeria is to be assigned a unique digital address, which takes the form of an 11-character digital postcode. This code is intended to serve as a distinct identifier for each structure.
To obtain their digital address, users need to download the NIPOST Digital Postcode app. Within the app, they should select the “Find My Postcode” option and grant the app access to their location. After that, they can locate and select their exact building on the map, then copy or save the 11-character postcode that appears.
If a building does not yet have a postcode, users can request one through the platform. This requires providing details such as the house number, street name, landmark, building type and its use. Photographs may also be requested as part of the verification process before a postcode is issued.
The digital address can be shared with delivery companies, online retailers, visitors and service providers, in addition to the conventional address. Businesses can also use it for location verification, deliveries and field operations.
In cases where a user cannot find their building or the location appears incorrect, several steps can be taken. First, check that the phone’s location or GPS is turned on and that the app has permission to access it. Next, examine the map closely to ensure the correct building has been selected rather than a neighbouring property. If the location is still inaccurate, moving outdoors to an area with a clearer GPS signal and refreshing the location may help. If no postcode is displayed, the platform’s option to request a postcode for the building can be used, with the required information provided. Users are advised not to guess the postcode and to confirm that it matches their exact building before using it for deliveries or official transactions.
Once assigned, the digital address can be saved and shared whenever a precise building location is needed. It can be used alongside the conventional address to help delivery companies, online retailers, visitors and service providers locate a specific building more easily.
The official portal for the system is the NIPOST Digital Postcode.
