Wike Tells FCT Residents to Vote for Leaders Who Will Sustain Infrastructure in 2027

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has called on residents to use the 2027 general elections to select leaders who can carry forward and broaden the infrastructure projects currently under way in the territory.

Wike made the appeal on Thursday in his Independence Day address to FCT residents, as Nigeria celebrated its 66th anniversary.

According to the minister, the election will provide an opportunity for residents to pick leaders who can build on the development efforts already taking shape across the FCT.

"My dear residents, as the nation prepares for the forthcoming general elections in January 2027, I enjoin you all to see it as an opportunity to vote in progressive, visionary leaders that will sustain and expand the infrastructural revolution that has commenced in the FCT, leaders who have vision and capacity to bring more development and prosperity to the people," he said.

Wike stated that his administration has committed substantial resources to roads, public transportation, healthcare and education as part of a drive to make Abuja a modern and well-functioning capital.

He noted that the road network has been extended from the city centre to communities throughout the territory, with drainage systems and solar-powered streetlights included in some of the projects.

The minister explained that these projects are meant to ease access to communities and also tackle security challenges in areas farther from the city centre.

Wike also revealed that a modern bus terminal has been built in the Abuja Municipal Area Council, with similar facilities planned for Kuje, Bwari and Gwagwalada.

He added that the administration is upgrading healthcare and education across the six area councils by renovating primary healthcare centres and schools.

"Healthy and educated populations are the foundation of sustainable development," Wike said.

On security, the minister said the FCT Administration is collaborating with security agencies to safeguard lives and property throughout the territory.

He said surveillance has been stepped up, while community policing and modern technology are being used to fight crime.

Wike encouraged residents to back the government's development efforts by following the law and guarding public infrastructure against vandalism.

He also asked residents to keep the capital clean and orderly and to foster peaceful coexistence among people of different ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds.

Calling Abuja a symbol of national unity, the minister said the FCT remains a place where Nigerians from various parts of the country live and work together.

"The Federal Capital Territory stands as the ultimate symbol of our national unity, a place where Nigerians from every tribe, tongue, and faith come together to live, work, and thrive in peace," he said.

Wike said the administration's core goal is to turn Abuja into a world-class capital city where public services serve residents across the territory.

He said the development agenda is being taken beyond the city centre so that residents in satellite towns and rural communities also gain from government projects and services.

The minister expressed confidence in Nigeria's future and praised President Bola Tinubu's administration for its reform efforts.

He said the FCT will keep aligning with the federal government's Renewed Hope agenda while bringing development to communities across the territory.

"We acknowledge the challenges that have faced our nation in the past 66 years, but also see a great opportunity for renewal and sustainable growth. We are very optimistic that the future is brighter," Wike said.
