Fireflies Brings Voice Dictation to Mac and Windows Apps
Fireflies.ai is expanding beyond meeting note-taking with a new dictation feature for its Mac and Windows applications. The tool, named Fireflies Talk, allows users to dictate text into any open application.
To activate it, Mac users press the Fn key, while Windows users press Ctrl + Win. The feature then captures speech and inserts a cleaned-up transcription directly into the active text field. It works similarly to other dictation products such as Wispr Flow, Willow, and SuperWhisper.
According to Fireflies CEO Krish Ramineni, the move reflects a broader ambition. "People speak roughly 3x faster than they type, and voice is a much more natural way to get work done. Meetings were just the starting point; the bigger vision has always been Fred as your AI teammate throughout the day. Talk takes Fireflies beyond meetings into email, Slack, docs, prompts, and wherever else you work," he said in an email to TechCrunch.
The company has chosen not to charge separately for the dictation capability, instead including it in its current subscription plans. That approach differs from some competitors. Wispr, for instance, made its meeting notetaker available for free to users of its dictation app. Speechify has also rolled out dictation features across multiple applications.
Fireflies said it does not retain any recordings and that dictation transcripts are stored locally on the user's device.
The new feature fits into Fireflies' wider strategy of using meeting transcriptions and accumulated context to automate workflows. The company has said it plans to build an assistant that leverages that context. Last year, it introduced "mini-apps" designed to surface insights from meetings in various ways. More recently, last month, it launched a tool for managing inboxes and drafting emails on behalf of users.
