Oborevwori orders Julius Berger to fix collapsed East-West Road section
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has ordered Julius Berger Nigeria Plc to commence immediate remedial work on the collapsed section of the East-West Road at Agbarho in Ughelli North Local Government Area.
The intervention is aimed at easing the hardship faced by motorists, residents and businesses following the failure of the Federal Government-owned road after heavy rainfall triggered erosion at the affected section.
The state Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, disclosed this in a statement issued in Asaba on Thursday.
Aniagwu said the governor was concerned about the impact of the road failure on road users and had directed Julius Berger to intervene despite the road being under the Federal Government.
He said, “Although the East-West Road is a Federal Government-owned infrastructure, the governor is concerned about the hardship being experienced by Deltans and other Nigerians using the corridor.
“Consequently, he has directed Julius Berger to immediately intervene and undertake remedial works on the failed portion of the road.”
The commissioner said the intervention reflected the administration’s approach of responding to urgent infrastructure challenges based on the needs of residents.
“For us, governance should be driven by the needs of the people and not by bureaucratic boundaries,” Aniagwu stated.
He described the East-West Road as a major economic corridor in the Niger Delta, linking communities and supporting the movement of people, agricultural produce, goods and services.
Aniagwu said the disruption could affect commuters, transport operators, traders and businesses operating along the route.
He assured road users that the remedial work would help improve traffic movement and reduce the hardship caused by the collapsed section.
The commissioner added that the state government would continue to work with relevant Federal Government agencies and private-sector partners to address infrastructure challenges affecting residents and economic activities.
He urged motorists to exercise caution when approaching the affected section while the remedial work was ongoing.p
