Dangote Foundation to Give Nigerian Students Free Shares in Refinery IPO

A new scheme from the Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF) will see Nigerian students receive complimentary shares in Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE (DPRP) as part of efforts to build a generation of investors.

Named the Student Share Grant Initiative, the programme targets those aged 18 and above enrolled in tertiary institutions, whether government-owned or private, throughout the country. It is intended to familiarise participants with saving, responsible investing and ownership by involving them directly in the refinery company's current Initial Public Offering (IPO).

The mechanics are straightforward: a student who passes verification and subscribes for at least 10 DPRP shares through the foundation's website will have an equivalent 10 shares bought and registered in their name by the Foundation, with no additional payment required from the student.

Alhaji Aliko Dangote, who chairs the Foundation, explained that the scheme was created to offer young Nigerians a proper first encounter with investing and asset ownership.

"Supporting young people goes beyond providing access to education. It must also involve equipping them with the knowledge and opportunities to participate in economic growth and wealth creation. Through this initiative, we want students to understand the value of saving, responsible investing and long-term ownership. Our goal is to help them develop an investment mindset early in life," he said.

He noted that coming into contact with investment possibilities at a young age can shape financial behaviour later in life and draw more people into the formal economy.

"When young people understand ownership and investment early, they are better positioned to make informed financial choices, build wealth responsibly and contribute more actively to economic development."

Mrs. Zouera Youssoufou, the Foundation's chief executive officer, said the programme connects classroom-style financial education with hands-on experience.

"Financial literacy becomes more impactful when people can apply what they learn. This programme allows eligible students to experience first-hand how the investment process works, from verification and subscription to allotment and ownership, while reinforcing the importance of responsible participation in the capital market," she said.

She further stated that the Foundation's aim goes past this single IPO to nurturing a lasting interest in financial literacy, investing and asset ownership.

According to ADF, the initiative stands alone as a Foundation programme meant to advance financial literacy, and participation is entirely voluntary.
