MTN Outage: Subscribers Fume, Count Losses, Demand Compensation

MTN Nigeria subscribers in parts of Lagos, Oyo, Rivers, Delta states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were left grappling with prolonged network disruption on Thursday, as service difficulties extended into the night, prompting complaints from customers over lost business opportunities, interrupted communications and the lack of a definite restoration timeline.
The telecommunications operator confirmed the disruption in a network outage alert, saying some services might be temporarily unavailable in affected areas. The incident affected customers who rely on mobile connectivity and internet services for personal communication, work and commercial transactions.
The downtime, which subscribers said lasted more than five hours and extended beyond midnight, sparked complaints on social media, with customers questioning the network’s reliability and demanding explanations for the prolonged interruption.
In its notice, MTN said: “We’re experiencing network challenges in some parts of Oyo, Lagos, Rivers, FCT and Delta States, and our services may be temporarily unavailable as a result.”
The company added that its engineers were working to restore services as soon as possible, while appealing for customers’ patience and understanding.
However, the assurance did little to calm some subscribers, who said the absence of a clear timeline for the restoration of services made it difficult to plan their activities or determine when normal connectivity would resume.
A customer, identified on X as @Agejoye.eni, questioned whether subscribers would receive compensation for the disruption, arguing that the operator’s appeal for patience did not address the losses customers might have suffered during the outage.
Another user, @boizzone45, expressed concern over the effect of repeated service interruptions on businesses that depend on internet connectivity, warning that subscribers could suffer significant losses when network services become unavailable for extended periods.
Similarly, @deluxuryavenue complained that the disruption had left the business unable to access banking services, payments from clients or verify basic services, describing the situation as particularly difficult for people handling important tasks.
While @_I am Sophia posted, I know what MTN did yesterday affected a lot of remote workers. @MTNNG, you people should do better.
The complaints highlighted the growing dependence of Nigerians on telecommunications infrastructure for activities beyond voice calls, including digital banking, online commerce, remote work, customer support and access to essential information.
Meanwhile, for small businesses, online vendors and digital service providers, prolonged connectivity problems can interrupt customer communications, delay payments and prevent transactions from being completed.
However, the scale of the financial losses arising from Thursday’s incident was not immediately established.
Other subscribers called on MTN to compensate affected FibreX customers, suggesting that additional service days would offer some relief for the period when connectivity was unavailable.
The disruption also renewed questions about how telecommunications operators communicate with subscribers during major outages, particularly when the cause of a failure and the expected restoration time remain unclear.
MTN did not immediately disclose the specific cause of Thursday’s network challenges or the number of subscribers affected. The company’s initial notice identified parts of five locations but did not establish that all customers in those areas had experienced a complete loss of service.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), which regulates the telecommunications industry and monitors service quality, lists major network incidents through its live incident-reporting platform. A report on the commission’s website identified an MTN major outage on Thursday, although the extent of the impact on individual subscribers was not stated in the notice reviewed.
The latest disruption came amid continuing public scrutiny of telecommunications service quality and demands for operators to provide more reliable connectivity as Nigerians increasingly depend on digital services for economic and social activities.
Although MTN said its engineers were working to restore services, subscribers’ complaints underscored the need for clearer updates during prolonged outages, alongside transparent explanations of what went wrong and what measures would prevent a recurrence.
Meanwhile, as of the information available for this report, MTN had not publicly provided a detailed explanation of the incident.
