AbdulRazaq: Kwara North should produce next governor

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has made the case for Kwara North producing his successor, explaining that the All Progressives Congress zoned its governorship slot to the district in order to speed up development there.

He spoke in Edu Local Government Area at the palace of the Emir of Lafiagi, Alhaji Muhammed Kudu Kawu, during a visit to sympathise with residents over recent flooding.

According to the governor, areas tend to benefit more when their own people hold leadership positions, describing this as a natural occurrence.

He stated that his administration had resolved that the state's next governor should emerge from Kwara North so that the zone would experience greater impact.

AbdulRazaq thanked the people of Kwara North, including the Lafiagi Emirate, for their continued backing of his government.

Turning to the floods, the governor said dredging the River Niger remains the enduring answer and vowed to keep pressing for it.

He explained that the visit was intended to show solidarity with the communities affected by the flood and to explore ways of bringing them relief.

While noting that the situation was unfortunate, he expressed relief that no lives were lost, even though many properties were destroyed.

He added that dredging the River Niger falls outside the state's powers, but pledged that his administration would keep engaging federal bodies such as the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, Inland Waterways, HYPADEC and other agencies for assistance.

Earlier at Pututa, the governor assured the head of Pututa (Lashan Pututa), Alh Muhammed Manko Ibrahim, that the government was making serious efforts to resolve the problem.

He ordered the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to visit the community and document their losses so that adequate government support could be provided.

He also released N10m to the community to cover pressing needs such as medical care, food and drinking water.

AbdulRazaq further visited the College of Education (Technical), Lafiagi, and Lafiagi Stadium, which is being reconstructed, and gave an assurance that efforts would be stepped up to elevate the college to a Federal University of Education.

He also indicated that the government would consider reopening the Gbugbu International Market in Lafiagi, which had been shut for security reasons.
