Slotkin: Vance should stop trying to ‘cover’ himself over Iran war

Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) on Wednesday criticized Vice President Vance’s online post where he blamed the war in Iran for the Republican Party’s defeat in the midterms.

“Last night, the American people delivered a crystal-clear message about the mismanagement of this war, and what it has done to our pocketbooks,” Slotkin wrote in a post on social platform X.

“Whether you supported the war or simply failed to stop it, your job is not to try and cover yourself, but to get us out of it,” she added.

In a sweeping victory, the Democrats secured control of both the House and the Senate for the next term, including flipping several GOP-held seats in battleground states like Texas, Michigan, Ohio, Kansas and Iowa.

Vance on Wednesday, in a lengthy post online, put the blame of the Republican party’s midterm losses on the ongoing war in Iran.

“The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night,” he wrote. “If you’d like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that’s at least honest.”

The ongoing Middle East conflict was a concern for voters leading up to Election Day. In a recent Gallup poll, released before the midterms, roughly 77 percent voters said the war would be “an extremely “extremely” or “very” important issue when casting their vote.

Slotkin, in her post, added, “You and President Trump got us into this war, without a clear objective and without regard for the will of the American people. It’s cost us American lives and billions of dollars of American treasure, with no end in sight,”

Trump also told The Wall Street Journal during an election night interview that the Iran war was partially to blame for the sweeping losses his party faced in the midterms.

“The decision to go to war is the most solemn responsibility that a President and Vice President have as leaders,” Slotkin wrote.
