Cruz warns ‘Texans will be hurt’ after ‘blue tsunami’

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz (R) issued a stark warning on Wednesday evening after Democrats flipped a Texas Senate seat and the governor’s mansion in the midterm elections.

In a lengthy statement shared on social media, the GOP senator said that “Texans will be hurt” by the blue tsunami that swept across the state and country on Tuesday.

“Their assault on business will make Texas a much less attractive place to start or grow a small business,” he wrote. “Texas will become more like California if they succeed in halting all new investment into AI.”

State Reps. James Talarico and Gina Hinojosa became the first Democrats elected to the U.S. Senate and Texas governor’s office in decades in a stunning upset for Republicans in the Lone Star State on Election Day.

“Texas is blue. That is a hard sentence to utter,” Cruz wrote. “But Texas, today at least, is blue. As we sit here today, I am the only statewide elected Republican who remains in Texas. That’s not something I ever thought I would say.”

The Texas Republican and other prominent GOP leaders, including President Trump, backed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) in the Senate race. Talarico defeated the Republican nominee by over 12 percentage points, according to Decision Desk HQ.

Cruz said he spoke with the Democratic victor following his win on Tuesday evening to congratulate him “on his very impressive victory.”

“It was a pleasant conversation, and I told him that I looked forward to working with him to try to benefit Texas,” he said.

The Republican senator said his party will need to do “two things” in the next two years under new Democratic control of both chambers of Congress: “fight the madness” and “rebuild.”

In a Wednesday op-ed in The Wall Street Journal, outgoing GOP Texas Sen. John Cornyn urged his party to refocus on winning principles following their losses in the Lone Star State and nationwide.

“This week’s beat-down wasn’t only foreseeable, it was foreseen,” the Republican wrote, citing shortcomings in GOP candidates’ appeals to voters and the Trump administration’s ability to deliver on 2024 campaign promises.

However, both Cornyn and Cruz expressed optimism that the GOP will regain the seats lost to Democrats this cycle.

Cruz wrote in his Wednesday evening post that he was “filled with hope and optimism.”

“Texas will be red again,” he continued. “We have not suddenly become a bunch of tofu-eating, gun-banning, tutu-wearing pinko commie liberals. That ain’t us. Texas is still Texas.”
