Gombe PDP Suspends Two Governorship Aspirants Over Anti-Party Activities

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Gombe State has placed a one-month suspension on two of its governorship aspirants, Khamisu Ahmed Mailantarki and Usman Aliyu Garry, accusing them of anti-party activities after Tuesday's rerun primary.
The party announced the suspension in a statement issued by its State Publicity Secretary, Abdulkadir Ahmad Dukku, dated September 30.
According to the statement, the decision was taken during an emergency joint meeting of the PDP State Working Committee and ward executives from Dawaki and Herwagana, the wards to which Mailantarki and Garry belong.
The party alleged that the two aspirants engaged in misconduct and violated its constitution, claiming their actions after taking part in the September 29 governorship rerun could cause division and confusion among members.
The PDP specifically pointed to remarks Mailantarki made in an interview with journalists after the primary, in which he rejected the result announced by the party and declared himself the winner.
The rerun had resulted in the declaration of former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Pantami, as the winner.
Both Mailantarki and Garry had earlier rejected Pantami's declaration as winner, questioning his eligibility to participate in the exercise. Garry also expressed dissatisfaction with certain aspects of the primary, alleging that voting did not take place as expected in his area.
The rerun was held after the Federal High Court in Gombe, on September 24, nullified the party's previous governorship primary and directed the PDP to organise a fresh exercise within 30 days.
The PDP said the two aspirants had willingly agreed to participate in the fresh primary but later engaged in conduct it deemed contrary to the party's rules.
