Tinubu and Sanwo-Olu Mark Nigeria's 66th Independence Anniversary with Calls for Unity and Economic Hope

As Nigeria celebrates its 66th Independence Day, President Bola Tinubu and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu have both called on citizens to remain united and dedicated to the country's progress.

In a message shared on his X account on Thursday, Governor Sanwo-Olu reflected on the nation's journey since gaining independence on 1 October 1960, acknowledging the difficulties encountered along the way but also pointing to periods of notable advancement. He stated that through these experiences, Nigerians have demonstrated resilience and determination.

The governor expressed enduring optimism about Nigeria's future, saying he has deep faith in the country and in what can be accomplished when people stand together. He also stressed that Nigeria's diversity should be viewed as a source of strength rather than something that divides.

Sanwo-Olu encouraged Nigerians to honour the sacrifices made by those who fought for independence and contributed to national development, noting that the task of building a united country falls on both current and future generations. He added that Nigeria belongs to all its citizens, and its future will be determined by the choices made and the collective efforts put in.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu, in his Independence Day broadcast, said that after decades of economic hardship, Nigeria is now on the path to prosperity. He noted that his administration has made tough economic decisions since taking office, which he said have improved the country's economic outlook.

The president reported that the economy grew by more than four percent in 2026, inflation has dropped from its peak, foreign reserves have been replenished, and the foreign exchange market has become more stable. He said the next focus is to ensure that these economic reforms translate into better living standards for Nigerians, particularly by reducing the cost of living, creating jobs, and expanding opportunities.

Tinubu outlined plans to lower the cost of living by reducing the expenses involved in producing and transporting goods. He emphasised the importance of expanding mechanised irrigation and dry-season farming, improving access to seeds and fertiliser, increasing mechanisation, and investing in storage and transportation. He also mentioned ongoing efforts to build and complete roads, railways, and ports that link farms and factories to markets.

The president acknowledged that many Nigerians are still grappling with the costs of food, education, healthcare, and transportation. He pledged that his government would bolster social support programmes while also pursuing long-term strategies to alleviate poverty. He remarked, "We cannot erase in four years what accumulated over generations. But we can change its course."

Describing the current period as a shift from economic reform to prosperity, Tinubu urged Nigerians to continue working together for a more prosperous nation. He said, "Let us go forward together, with faith in ourselves, faith in our country, and faith that the sacrifices we have made will yield their reward."

The president concluded by wishing Nigerians a happy Independence Day and encouraging continued confidence in the country's future.
