Trump's Economic Approval Plummets to New Low, Poll Finds

A new poll released Thursday by The Associated Press-NORC Research Center reveals that public dissatisfaction with President Trump's economic stewardship has reached its lowest point, with 73 percent of U.S. adults disapproving of his handling of the economy.

The survey found that 65 percent of Americans hold Trump's policies more responsible for elevated prices than other economic factors. Additionally, 69 percent of respondents, including half of Republicans, described his agenda as "worse than expected," while 23 percent said it was about as expected and 7 percent said it was better than expected.

Approval ratings for Trump's economic performance have declined significantly. Only 26 percent of Americans approve of his overall economic management, and just 17 percent approve of his response to the cost of living. The poll indicates that approval of Trump's economic agenda has fallen by 14 percentage points since March 2025.

A majority of respondents also believe the national economy and the country as a whole have deteriorated since Trump returned to office last year. Specifically, 61 percent said the economy is worse off under the current administration, compared to 23 percent who said it is better off. Similarly, 61 percent said the country is worse off, while 26 percent said it is better off.

Many Americans also expressed negative views on Trump's handling of other issues. For trade negotiations, 58 percent said his performance was "worse than expected"; for foreign policy, 55 percent; and for immigration, 48 percent.

Few respondents think Trump has fulfilled his campaign promises. About 17 percent, including both Republicans and Democrats, said he has not delivered, with 87 percent of Democrats agreeing. Just under half of Republican respondents, 48 percent, said the president has tried to keep his promises but has often been unable to do so.

Trump's approval ratings have been steadily declining over the summer, dropping into the low 30s in several polls. A Wall Street Journal poll published last Friday showed his approval at 37 percent, the lowest for any president before midterm elections since the Journal began polling on the matter in 1990.

Trump and Republicans are also dealing with the widely unpopular Iran war, which has now lasted seven months as of Monday. The conflict has contributed to rising prices, affecting inflation earlier this year and likely next year, and causing gas prices to surge.

The AP-NORC survey was conducted from September 24 to 28 and included 2,140 respondents. The margin of error is 2.9 percentage points.
