LOMA 4.0 experts advocate legacy-building, smart digital OOH

A recent study on consumer penetration and audience behaviour has shown that Out-of-Home advertising remains a powerful driver of consumer action, with more than seven out of every 10 Nigerians surveyed taking a commercial action after seeing an outdoor advert. The Nigeria OOH Consumer Penetration and Audience Behaviour Study 2026, the industry’s first of its kind, was unveiled by the organisers of the Location Marketing Conference and Awards (LOMA), surveying 1,800 persons across 12 Nigerian cities, including Lagos, Abuja, Asaba, Port Harcourt, and Enugu.
Speaking at the unveiling, the Chairman of the survey’s oversight committee and Business Unit Director of +Acuity Ltd, Emmanuel Adediran, said the findings have settled the question of attribution in the frequency and reach of OOH campaigns, as the data clearly shows how outdoor ads translate into real consumer behaviour.
On specific actions taken, talking about the brand was the most common response, with nearly four in every 10 respondents doing so, closely followed by searching online, which about three in every 10 respondents did.
The study also found that Lagos absorbs nearly three-quarters of all national OOH spend but delivers only about six in every 10 of the attention, the lowest billboard visibility of any city surveyed. In contrast, cities such as Asaba, Enugu, and Onitsha were identified as home to some of the heaviest, highest-value audiences. It further revealed a gap in how advertisers reach consumers, noting that market areas are visited weekly by about eight in every 10 Nigerians, yet account for less than three in every 10 reported OOH exposures, leaving one of the country’s largest recurring audiences underserved.
The convener of LOMA Conference and Awards, Kingsley Onwukaeme, described the report as timely, adding that advertisers and media owners stand to benefit when reliable data is available to guarantee return on investment.
Beyond the study’s unveiling, other industry players used the 4.0 edition of the conference to share perspectives on where the sector is headed.
The Group General Manager of Abiok Publicity, Oiakhina Emperor, in a presentation titled “Building a Legacy Brand Through Operational Excellence,” drew a line between short-term success and lasting legacy, explaining that success is measured by revenue, awareness, visibility, and market share, while legacy rests on trust, consistency, institutional memory, and reputation. According to him, the true test of a legacy brand is whether its core promise can outlive the people who created it.
Emperor noted that a billboard is only the visible end of a much larger operation supported by planning, location intelligence, media buying, production, installation, monitoring, maintenance, reporting, client service, and measurement. He identified six pillars of legacy-building: purpose, people, process, performance, progress, and perseverance, adding that excellence becomes habit, habit becomes culture, and culture creates capability that outlives individuals. He also cautioned against a “good enough” mindset, warning that small compromises accumulate into friction, lost value, and institutional failure.
Also speaking, the Technical Partner at CJtronics, Abdulwahab Adeyinka, presented on “The Intelligent OOH Ecosystem,” outlining how connected hardware, Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure, and smart software are turning static outdoor displays into data-driven digital networks. He said traditional OOH has been held back by manual processes, deployment delays, blindness to equipment downtime, a lack of accurate audience data, and rigid sales models. In the modern ecosystem, he explained, displays become connected nodes that not only show adverts but also report real-time performance, environmental conditions, and audience engagement to central platforms by combining smart LED displays, edge-computing media players, and sensors with cloud-based content management and inventory tools while utiliing dynamic content optimisation.
Adeyinka further highlighted programmatic digital OOH, which links supply-side and demand-side platforms with real-time location data to automate ad buying, target delivery, and track audience impressions, noting that CJtronics offers end-to-end services across indoor, outdoor, stadium, and retail environments. The survey was conducted by Research Brooks in partnership with TMKG Consulting, with the Outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN) and other sectoral bodies on the audit panel, drawing commendation from stakeholders across the OOH industry.
