Independence Day: Wike Says FCT Infrastructure Revolution Will Continue Beyond City Centre

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has assured residents that the administration would sustain its drive to transform Abuja into a world-class capital city through massive investment in infrastructure, transportation, healthcare and education.

Wike gave the assurance in his 2026 Independence Day anniversary message to residents of the FCT, where he said the territory remained a symbol of Nigeria’s unity and a place where citizens from different ethnic and religious backgrounds coexist peacefully.

The minister congratulated residents on Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, noting that the nation’s journey since independence had been marked by resilience, challenges and opportunities for renewal.

He said the theme of the celebration, “From Reforms to Stability: Consolidating Nigeria’s Renewed Hope for Shared Prosperity,” reflected the government’s commitment to addressing national challenges while creating opportunities for sustainable growth.

According to him, the FCT Administration remained committed to delivering a modern, inclusive and functional capital city where residents would benefit from improved public services.

Wike said the administration had embarked on major infrastructure projects across the territory, including the rehabilitation and construction of roads, drainage systems and solar-powered streetlights, extending development beyond the city centre to satellite towns and rural communities.

“This administration has totally transformed the road network of the FCT from the City Centre to the remotest rural parts of the Territory, providing world-class roads, equipped with drainage and solar lighting, thereby putting an end to both inaccessibility and insecurity in far-flung settlements in the Federal Capital Territory,” he said.

The minister added that the administration was expanding public transportation infrastructure, with ultramodern bus terminals already constructed in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), while similar facilities would be extended to other area councils including Kuje, Bwari and Gwagwalada.

He explained that the move was aimed at providing residents with safer, more efficient and reliable transportation services.

On social services, Wike said the administration was improving healthcare and education across the six area councils, stressing that quality schools and functional primary healthcare centres were critical to building a prosperous society.

He also reiterated the commitment of the FCT Administration to ensuring the safety of residents, saying security agencies were being supported through improved surveillance, community policing and modern technology.

The minister urged residents to remain law-abiding and protect public infrastructure from vandalism, while maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of Abuja.

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Wike called on residents to participate actively in the democratic process and support leaders committed to sustaining development in the territory.

He urged residents to continue promoting peace, tolerance and unity, describing Abuja as “a beacon of hope and prosperity” for Nigeria and the African continent.

“Together, we will build an FCT that we can all be proud of – a beacon of hope and prosperity for the entire African continent,” he said.
