NEDC says over N1.5trn projects underway across North-East
Projects worth more than N1.5 trillion are being executed by the North East Development Commission (NEDC) throughout the North-East geopolitical zone, the agency's Managing Director, Mohammed Alkali, has announced.
Alkali said the portfolio covers roads, bridges and other physical interventions designed to improve conditions for millions of residents in the region.
He spoke on Monday in Abuja at the start of a three-day International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) Executive Retreat organised for the commission's senior management staff.
According to the NEDC chief, the commission's decision to adopt ISO management standards is intended to bring international best practices into its operations, its decision-making and the way it delivers development programmes.
He noted that the commission has so far been certified under five ISO management system standards. These cover quality management, environmental management, occupational health and safety, anti-bribery management and sustainable development in communities.
Alkali linked the retreat to the North-East Master Plan, which he said defines the commission's development priorities. The management systems, he added, determine how well those priorities are realised through planning, accountability, risk management, coordination and performance monitoring.
"The Master Plan tells us what we must deliver for the North-East. Our leadership, our systems and our collective discipline will determine how successfully we deliver it," he said.
In her remarks, the NEDC Acting Head of Governance and Compliance Service Reforms, Fatima Dalhatu, called on senior management staff to stop treating ISO standards as certificates to be displayed and instead make them part of everyday work.
Dalhatu explained that while the master plan supplies the strategic direction, the commission's Integrated Management System (IMS) provides the discipline needed to meet the objectives that have been set.
"GCS can coordinate, but senior management has to own the system. Without ownership, we'll just have certificates on the wall," she said.
