Bayelsa PDP Faults Anniversary Spending, Flags 22-Year Tower Hotel Delay

The Peoples Democratic Party in Bayelsa State has taken aim at the scale of events marking the state's 30th anniversary, arguing that the government should be paying more attention to the economic strain on residents.

According to the party, a large number of people in Bayelsa are still contending with rising living costs, joblessness and poverty, and it believes the anniversary offers a chance for the administration to confront the problems affecting ordinary citizens.

In a statement issued by its State Publicity Secretary, Hon. Ikaebimo Mark, the PDP said the government ought to concentrate on finishing abandoned projects, generating employment and widening economic opportunities for those living in the state.

The party singled out the Bayelsa Tower Hotel project in Yenagoa, which it said has been left uncompleted for roughly 22 years even though public funds were reportedly committed to it.

Mark said that project, along with other abandoned schemes across the state, should be treated as development priorities instead of being neglected while money goes into anniversary activities.

"At 30, Bayelsa deserves more than pomp and pageantry. It deserves accountability, completed projects, jobs, economic opportunities and a government that prioritises the welfare of its people," he said.

The Publicity Secretary contended that the anniversary should serve as a moment to evaluate how far the state has come since it was created in 1996 and to pinpoint areas that need urgent action.

He said the circumstances of residents must stay at the centre of any conversation about the state's accomplishments, especially at a time when many households are under economic pressure.

Mark also asked the state government to be more transparent about public spending and to clarify how resources meant for development projects and other programmes are being used.

"The government must reflect on the real condition of Bayelsans and redirect public resources and attention towards addressing the pressing needs of the people," he said.

He insisted that marking the state's 30th anniversary should go beyond ceremonies and include a stocktaking of projects, employment, infrastructure and the living conditions of residents.

Mark urged the government to give priority to completing projects that can stimulate economic activity and deliver direct benefits to the people.
