Agboola Sole Nigerian on FinTech Magazine's 2026 Top 100 Leaders List

Olugbenga "GB" Agboola, the founder and chief executive of Flutterwave, has been listed as the sole Nigerian representative in FinTech Magazine's 2026 Top 100 Fintech Leaders.
The recognition arrives at a time when African fintech firms are under growing pressure to expand past basic payment processing and develop infrastructure for cross-border transactions, digital banking, financial data and other technology-driven financial services.
FinTech Magazine said its selection process weighed criteria such as organisational scale and market impact, governance and responsibility, professional recognition and industry influence.
The magazine noted that the executives chosen for the list represent various areas of transformation across the global financial services sector, covering digital payments, embedded finance, open banking, artificial intelligence and real-time transactions.
Agboola's inclusion coincides with shifts in Flutterwave's commercial and regulatory activities in Nigeria.
In April, the company said it had obtained a Nigerian Microfinance Bank licence, widening the scope of financial services it can offer under regulatory supervision. With the licence, the company can hold deposits and provide services such as business accounts and payouts.
Flutterwave has also moved into open banking after acquiring Mono, a Nigerian platform for financial data and account connectivity. That transaction placed payment infrastructure and financial-data capabilities within one corporate structure.
The company has additionally pushed into cross-border payment infrastructure and digital-asset settlement. In June, it disclosed an investment from Ripple as part of its Series E funding round, along with plans to incorporate Ripple's payment infrastructure and RLUSD stablecoin into its operations.
It later announced an investment from Circle Ventures and support for USDC settlement, as fintech firms increasingly explore stablecoins and other digital-asset infrastructure for international payments.
According to Flutterwave, it has processed more than one billion transactions worth over $50 billion, with operations in more than 30 African countries and payment support for more than 50 currencies.
Speaking about the 2026 list, FinTech Magazine chief executive Glen White said the selected leaders were driving changes in financial services through technology, financial inclusion, product development and customer experience.
White said artificial intelligence, real-time payments and digital-first banking were becoming increasingly important to the future of the financial services industry.
Agboola has previously appeared on the TIME100 Next list, while Flutterwave has drawn international attention as one of the African fintech companies working to extend payment infrastructure across the continent and into international markets.
His latest recognition comes as Nigerian fintech companies continue to operate in a more heavily regulated environment, with issues around consumer protection, data governance, digital payments, financial inclusion and cross-border transactions gaining greater prominence.
